An Exhaust Gas Analyzer (EGA), also commonly known as an emission analyzer, is a sophisticated diagnostic instrument designed to measure the concentration of specific gases present in the exhaust stream of internal combustion engines. It is a critical tool for automotive repair, environmental compliance testing, and engine performance research.
The primary function of the analyzer is to quantify key pollutant gases, most notably hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), and oxygen (O2). For modern vehicles equipped with catalytic converters, it also precisely measures oxides of nitrogen (NOx). The device operates by extracting a sample of exhaust gas, typically via a probe inserted into the vehicle's tailpipe. This sample is conditioned (filtered, dried, and cooled) before being channeled into a series of dedicated sensors. Each gas component is detected using specific technologies: Non-Dispersive Infrared (NDIR) sensors for HC, CO, and CO2; electrochemical cells for O2 and NOx.
